Tour-Style Home Turf: Sam Burns Backyard Setup

Sam Burns emerged on Tour after becoming a professional in the 2017 season and has kept getting better every season. He’s won multiple PGA Tour events, including consecutive Valspar Championship wins and a strong start on the Korn Ferry Tour — achievements that make clear why he values realistic play.
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
Putting green: 1,000 sq ft — GB177 (Golden Bear Putt), color 301
Lawn turf grass: 1,500 sq ft — 164SW, color 301
Sand bunker: 144 sq ft — Artificial turf topped with real sand
Total project: 2,644 sq ft
THE GREEN: GB177 GOLDEN BEAR PUTT
Sam went with GB177 (color 301) for a putting area that mimics a natural putting surface. The low, thick pile gives realistic roll and consistent pace, so every stroke provides feedback. For a player who values touch practice between tournaments, that consistency is key.

THE LAWN: 164SW IN COLOR 301
The 1,500 sq ft lawn area uses 164SW in the same color to create a smooth transition from putting green to fringe. That space is great for warmups, short chips, relaxing with family, and maintaining a neat yard with minimal maintenance.

THE BUNKER: REAL SAND OVER TURF
Instead of a artificial sand look, Sam’s bunker uses real sand applied over artificial grass. That delivers realistic trap shots while ensuring tidy transitions and low maintenance around the green. It’s a smart choice for anyone exploring synthetic grass installation with unique options.

WHY THIS LAYOUT WORKS
This setup offers both pro training and daily enjoyment. A practice putting area lets Sam work on speed and line. The turf lawn provides soft landing zones for shots and a place for relaxation and play. The sand patch delivers realistic bunker practice without the trouble of building a full bunker.
Sam’s Career Highlights: Sam secured his first pro victory at the Savannah Golf Championship in 2018, closing strong with three straight birdies, and later won more PGA Tour events, including the Sanderson Farms PGA event and Valspar wins. He honed his game at college at LSU before earning recognition on Tour.
